Arrests the car when speed exceeds the rated limit
The governor is the part of the safety chain that decides when something has gone wrong. A governor rope runs from the car over the governor sheave and down to a tensioning pulley in the pit, so the sheave turns in proportion to car speed. When flyweights fly out far enough, the governor jaws clamp the rope; the rope stops moving with the car, the linkage pulls, and the safety gear sets.
Tripping speed is a setting, not a guess. It is chosen against the rated speed of the lift and the class of safety gear it operates. We set each governor to the figure the installation calls for and mark it, so the commissioning engineer can verify it on site rather than take it on trust.
